HP 5si Tray 1 dead - attention light flashes

Insights? When I turn my 5si on the orange attention light lights but eventually goes off at printer "Ready". Printer prints fine from tray 2 and tray 3. Tray 1 appears totally dead. When I pull down tray 1 and insert paper the orange attention light starts flashing immediately. If I try "Test" print from Tray 1 printer automatically "processes from tray 2". Tray 1 does not lift nor does the roller ever move. Whats the deal? I don't know how to clear the error log so I can't correlate messages with actual malfunction.
First off what does the display on the printer say when you put paper in tray 1? Also are you running the test from the printer control panel on the printer or from the computer? On the 5SI the only sensors effected in tray 1 is when you load paper in the tray. What happens is the display will tell you what paper is set for the default and sort of asks you to hit enter to confirm that is the paper in the tray or giving you a chance to change it. It is also possiblie you have a dead tray or the interface wire is not connected. Answer the first questions first and we can try to resolve you problem.

Thanks for the quick response -
1 - When printer first turned on display says "Internal Test" and "Attention" light is immediately on and flashing.

2 - After printer "Ready" the "Attention" light goes off. Then inserting paper in tray 1, "attention" light comes on immediately and display says "Tray 1 Size = Letter".

3 - Using MS Word from computer to print single page letter. In printer dialog box selected "Print to Tray 1". Surprise! letter prints from Tray 1 fine.

4 - Inserted another sheet in Tray 1 "Attention" light flashing and display says "Tray 1 Size = Letter". I now cannot change menus while "Attention" light flashing.

5 - Wait 30 seconds "Attention" light goes off with paper still in Tray 1.

6 - Can now select Menu item "Test" . Select Test Tray 1 paper path. Surprise - single sheet feeds and prints fine.

7 - Put 20 sheets in Tray 1. Attention light flashing. Wait 30 seconds "Attention" light goes off. I find I can now print from the "Test" menu or from the computer and everything works fine except "Paper Lift" sticks down occasionally and when it "sticks" down job automatically switches to Tray 2.

8 - Took paper out and re-inserted into tray 1. "Attention" light flashing. Print from computer while light flashing and printer automatically processes from Tray 2.

Apparently when I first encountered this problem, I didn't wait 30 seconds for the "Attention" light to go off. Therefore I thought Tray 1 was entirely dead. I now see that if I wait 30 seconds after inserting paper into Tray 1 all seems to behave normally but if I try printing while the light is still flashing the printer automatically processes job from tray 2. Also while the light is flashing I cannot use the menus on the printer. What is flashing "Attention" light telling me? How do I fix?

I guess the question is "What is wrong that causes the "Attention" light to flash?

What is causing the attention light to flash is built into the firmware of the printer. The printer does not know what size paper is in tray 1 when it first installed. It reverts to the settings from the previous setup and indictes it is letter. If you hit on-line that tells the printer yes letter has just been inserted and it will print. Another way you can setup the printer and tray 1 in particular is to set the type of paper in tray 1. Example would be letterhead paper. This way unless the jobs calls for letterhead paper the printer will always take from another tray for just plain letter size paper. Keep in mind that each time the paper sensor is tripped in tray 1 the printer will ask you to confirm the size paper in tray 1. The type paper is never confirmed. Hope this helps your understanding. As to the problem with the lifting bar, sometimes it could just be lack of use which causes it to stick. Maybe ;if you use it a lot it will stop. If not another trick which sometimes works, but is a lot of work, is to just remove the tray one assembly from the printer and then reinstall. The back and front covers have to come off which is a lot of work. If you need instructions email me and I will attempt to extract them for you. You can also purchase rebuilt tray 1 assemblies from partsnow.com or depot-americal.com. They both sell them on advance exchange. Good Luck.

Thanks dmz - That is very helpful. Your saying the flashing attention light is normal operation...I just need to understand the printer requirements. Three weeks ago I installed a rebuilt PIU in this 5si, so removing covers is no biggie at this point. Who knows, I may have caused the Tray 1 problem since I had to remove and re-install Tray 1 when I replaced the PIU. If the lifting bar doesn't improve with use I'll re-install as you suggest. Thanks again for the help, this forum is very useful, hope others were helped too.
