Epson Epson Stylus Color 640

Epson Stylus Color 640

Can anyone help please. My printer has suddenly started flashing all 4 lights (power, paper, black ink, colour ink)and nothing I've tried will stop it. It will not respond to any commands other than "off" and "on", at which it goes through its startup and again stops with all lights flashing. Thank you.
Download the ssc service utility and try to reset the protection counter.

Turn on the printer holding down Load/Eject and Cleaning buttons.
When the Load/Eject led starts blinking, release the two buttons and press the Cleaning button for 10 seconds.
When both black and color cartridge led will come on release the cleaning button.
Wait for 30 seconds and your printer should be ready to print.

No - I can't get a situation where anything other than all four lights flash. I know the black ink ran out. Could that be anything to do with it. Trouble is, because it doesn't respond to any commands, I can't get the carriage to stop in the right place to change it!

Ian: I doubt that your old black ink cartridge has anything to actually do with your problem. You can simply unplug the Power Cable from the wall, when the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly is away from the far right side, such as when the printer is first turned on. Once that holder assembly is unlocked, it can easily be slid back-n-forth, to the correct position to remove that black cartridge. However, you cannot simply just swap that black ink cartridge, with the power turned off, because your printer will not even know it was actually replaced. Open the locking cover, over the black cartridge, remove the old cartridge and close that locking cover over the empty area, where that black cartridge was removed. Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Your printer should of course not find any black cartridge and the black ink out light will hopefully come on. If it doea, then push-in on the black ink button and that holder assembly may move over to the correct position, so you can install a new black cartridge. If it does move over, open the locking cover and install the new black ink cartridge, like normal [be sure to remove the yellow pull tape]. Then push-in on the black ink button a second time and the printer should go thru New Cartridge Initalization, which will correctly install that new black cartridge. Unfortunatly, if your printer is already in another Service Error Condition [all lights flashing], it may not allow you to replace that black cartridge, until that other Service Error Condition is actually corrected. When all the lights are flashing that indicates a MAINTENANCE REQUEST ERROR CONDITION. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water, then dry them out and simply reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work. You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL" or a "RESET PROCEDURE", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ). You can also find most Service Adjustment Programs/Resets from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=1_56_50 ...There is an "Epson Stylus 400,440,640,660,740 Information Page", available to view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/440.html . You can click-on the WASTE INK PAD SERVICING section, or the HOUSING REMOVAL section, over on the left side of the page, for some additional information that might be of some help to you. You will still need to obtain that WASTE INK PAD RESET PROCEDURE, to clear that Service Error Condition, even if you clean or replace those Waste Ink Pads...Good Luck! Denny Conway

The printer may be operating properly. Make sure that your computer's print settings are not set to black and white only.
Hope this helps.
