Hp HP LaserJet 5MP

My G4 mac (usb/firewire/ethernet) seems hopelessly incompatible with my HP Laserjet 5mp (round 8-pin serial and PC connectors). Is there a way to make them communicate to one another?

Have tried the obvious routes to no avail. Also, if I need to purchase another printer, are the multi-function printers as good as single function and can you recommend a site that will help me make an informed decision.
Thank you,
I am not a MAC person, but have you tried a usb to parallel adapter or an external print server with TCP/IP.

Thank you for your reply. I was told that the parallel port isn't usable with a Mac (is that incorrect?). As for using an external print server... do you mean work on one computer, transfer to another and print from there? If so, I think (?) I'd still have a problem because the programs required to print my docs also require the newer mac.

As I said I am not a MAC person. What I mean by a print server is an external tcp/ip printer box such as a hp external jet direct unit which connects to your tcp/ip network and the other end connects to the printer's parallel port.

I'll look into your suggestion. Thanks so murch for the feedback I've been stumped.
