HP 6P cycles

we have an HP 6p that seems to be stuck. the power up sequence is as follows:
1. system powers on and cycles through panel lights seven times (ready-data-error).
2. Error light and data light then stay on
3. feed motor cycles on and off at 2 second intervals untill power is turned off.
4. front panel buttons have no effect
5. paper in tray and/or manual feed has no effect

It seems that the printer is stuck durring the initialization phase. Any ideas?

I'd say it was probably a bad formatter board. The only way to isolate it would be to take the cover off and remove the formatter board. Put the cover back on and see if it is still exhibiting the same behavior. Don't forget to reinstall the toner cartridge. You won't get any lights, but you should lose the other symptoms.
