Hp HP LaserJet 4050

Print Engine Test

I have a HP Laserjet 4050 that,at different times, displays Print Engine Test and prints page after page of horizontal lines. This continues until the printer is out of paper. Turning off the printer stops the problem for a while, but it starts again soon. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
There is an engine test button on the dc controller. You can see it on the left side of the printer just below the fan. It's inside the small hole. Button could be stuck or defective. You might have to replace the dc controller. While I haven't personally seen this problem, I have heard of several instances of it. Try poking something in the hole a few times. If that doesn't work, the printer might still be under warranty or you could convince HP that it is their problem since it is happening to other people. They're probably aware of it, but like Firestone won't admit it till a bunch of people are killed by exploding printers. Good luck.
