Epson 600 - black won't print

A friend has given me his old Epson 600. Generous? Up to a point. The black won't print at all. Apparently he did that naughty thing of removing the cartridge when the 'out of ink' light started blinking, and reinstalling it to use the very last drop of ink. False economy? Probably. From reading other posts it's clear the head is now clogged. He put in a new cartridge but a test print shows no black whatsoever.

As the printer was a freebie I have nothing to lose by trying to clean the head. How can I attempt this without removing (and thus depressurising) the newly installed cartridge?
What is the best, and most easily available, cleaner?
Finally, as the colours are printing perfectly, is there any way of disabling the colour cartridge (to avoid wasting ink) when running the probably numerous head cleaning cycles that are going to be necessary?

Thanks all.
