Epson Epson LQ 850

Epson 850 horrible printout

I have the Epson 850, and about a year after I got it I started experiencing all kinds of problems. When I see that an ink color has run out, the light for replacing the cartridge does not ever go on, so I have to unplug it and manually move the cartridge holders to get access and replace them. Then when I do replace them, I have to go through the "clean printer head" process up to 6 or 7 times before I even get a solid inkflow. This uses up so much ink that I barely get any printouts before the same thing happens all over again. Even when everything is functioning properly, i still get unprinted lines and banding on my printouts. Is it time to buy a new printer?
Thanks for your help.
Yes, my choice would be an HP 932C. If you want to spend more, the P1000.
