Hp HP LaserJet 4

HP LJ 4+ and 4 on a Mac Network

I just got a HP LJ 4+ and HP LJ 4 donated to the school. They have network cards. We are a Mac school. I set them up and I can't see them on the network. Do they need to have postscript simms or do I need to configure something? Please Help.
They do need postscript simms and 6mb of memory to talk to a Mac.

I did a test print on each printer. 6megs and 22megs. I didn't see anything about a postscript simm. How would I tell. Do you sell postscript simms?

The test page would show a Postscript box if it were installed. There would also be a Postscript menu on the control panel. We don't have any postscript simms.

I have located and ordered a Postscript simm for the LJ4. The moderator for forum on the HP site said I need a special Network card, with appletalk, #J4100A. I have a J2550 with a 10bt, RJ-45 connector. Am I going to have to buy a new network card? (I trust Moe and this site more, as funny as that might seem!)

Sorry to jump in, but I'm in the same boat. I have a LJ4 and just bought an ethernet card for it. I see from this thread that I'll need to add memory as well if I want to use the printer w/my iMac.

My question is about the PS SIMM. I've found one for the LJ4 PLUS and I'm wondering if it is the same as the one for the LJ4. HP part numbers are different but that might not mean anything. So, can I use the PS SIMM from the LJ4 PLUS in my LJ4?

I do know the LJ 4 tkes a #C2080A postscript simm and I ordered one for $99.00 + T/S. The LJ4+ takes a #C3129A and the cheapest I've seen is $173.00 + T/S. I'd like to know if they are interchangable too or if their are cheaper sources. I have been checking ebay, no luck. If I knew they would work with the current network cards and my school's Macs I would order the other postscript simms.

Where did you find the C2080A for $99. I've been looking for one one Ebay as well. I could shoot myself, a week or two ago someone was selling a LaserJet4 with the ehternet card and the PostScript simm for $150. Oh well.

Thanks for the reply,

J2552A is the card that suits 'most' networks - 10 base t, bnc, Appletalk, etc... the J2550A won't work for Appletalk - it's ethernet only... unfortunately the J4100A doesn't show on my lists (maybe it takes the newer cards longer to make it 'down under'??) - but as long as that is an Appletalk card, you'll be right...

As far as it goes, keep shopping around for the postscript card & jet direct - lots of places have stripped older printers for parts, and while the formatters, laser scanners, fusers, etc are all sold quite quickly, the optional I/O and add on cards often take a while longer to sell - some of the bigger companies have quite large stockpiles...

Stuarts post has me concerned. He says the J2550A is Ethernet only. I know that but since my iMac has an Ethernet port it should still work fine for me, right? I suppose if nobody knows for sure I'll find out the hard way:-)

Also, will I need a special Ethernet cable to plug the card into the computer without a hub? Or, can I just plug the iMac and the printer into the same hub that my PC network is using? The PC stuff is only runnint at 10 mbs so I'm not concerned that the slow JetDirect card will make thing worse than they already are speed wise.

Ok, I guess we are getting a good networking lesson. Thank you! Let's say I have a HP LJ 4 with a postscript simm and the J2550A jet direct card on an ethernet LAN. Can my ethernet networked Macs see the printer and print to it? Do I only need the J2552A card if I am running the old phoneline appletalk network?

Moe, If I need the J2552A card do you have some?

Got a bunch of good used ethernet cards in stock.

I have a laser jet 5, and I bought the postscript card to upgrade it to a 5M, but the card
Did not come with any directions... Do you know the correct card placement to get it to work.
I put it in the second slot, next to the 1st slot (20Meg memory card)

And it didnÕt work.

Stuart is right about the J2550A only having ethernet and 10Base-T. The J2552A has that and local talk and meant to be used by both the LJ 4 and the LJ 4+. The J4100A is designed for inkjet products. I have a J2341A Jet direct for local talk HP list is $470.00 give me an offer (This will work in a LJ 4). The postscript simm for a LJ 4 is HP part # c2080-69001 or C2080A and the postscript simm for a LJ 4+ is HP part # c3129-69001 or C3129A. Hpoe this helps

PS Hp did not get it righ and MOE did should I be suprised "not".
