fuser problems

What kind of problems will one encounter if the silicon grease is not applied beneath the teflon tube?

I have a HP Laserjet M1005.?I am experiencing problems with my fuser. I found out the fuser unit was torn from the sides, so i replaced the film but I did not know then that you are supposed to put the silicon grease on the heating unit first. I am experiencing printouts from with words and letters can be rubbed/scrapped off rather easily. Is this because I did not put the silicon grease?

You have to use a small amount of a special fuser grease on the flat surface of the heating element. It lubricates the sleeve and helps transfer the heat
