Printer making terrible sound (like rocks tumbling) and not printing
Yesterday, our HP laserjet 4100 started making a terrible sound (it sounds like rock tumbling inside the printer) whenever you print. Today, it will print but will only push the paper out halfway into the tray and jams. How can I fix this issue?
Never heard one do that. Try removing the fuser from the back of the printer (2 blue latches) You can turn the gear with your thumb and see if it turns easy. Check the gear is not worn and look at the gear inside the printer that drives it.
If you have another 4100 around you can swap the fuser and see if the noise goes away. Here's a link to removing the fuser assembly instructions -- http://www.printertechs.com/maintenancekit-instructions/hp-laserjet-4100/208-hp-laserjet-4100-fuser-installation If the fuser gears aren't worn/knocking, it is the gear drive, and it's probably not worth replacing on that model. (time intensive) Refurbished 4100's or similar newer 4250/4350 models are not expensive. http://www.printertechs.com/shop/hp-laserjet-4100n-refurbished
