Paper feeds 1/3 after replacing separation pad, subpads

It's an aftermarket cartridge, but it was working until I replaced the pads. Now it makes a creaking noise on initiation (request test page with front button), feeds a single sheet of paper properly (sometimes groaning, sometimes not), and then fails after feeding 1/3 of a sheet. I take the cartridge out and can remove the paper easily because it has just gotten to the edge of the fuser. I have taken the whole thing apart several times and feel confident that I can fix whatever it is. FWIW, when I have removed the motor, the gears turn easily.

Do I need a new pickup roller? Or is it something else?

Always hard to diagnose a problem someone has input into the printer.

Don't know if you messed with the pickup roller, but its proper position is with the rounded part facing towards you. If it is facing the other way, then it will do what you are describing. I can give you access to a video showing the proper way of replacing pads and roller.
